Cole Thompson
About Cole Thompson
Cole Thompson is a black and white photographer, living in Rochester, New York.
Cole began his curiosity in photography when he was 14 years old, him and his friend went out hiking and walked by and old ruined house that had been said to been the founder of Kodak, George Eastmans, house. This sparked Thompsons interest in photography, so he went and bought a starting developing kit and began to practice. Over the course of the next ten years of his life he read books constantly increasing his knowledge of developing and photography, learning and teaching himself the ways. At such a young age, he knew he was destined to be a photographer. He studied the techniques of people such as Ansel Adams, one of his favourite photographers. People often told him that his work looked so alike to Ansel Adams , and took it as a compliment until one day someone told him that he needed to be more unique and create his own vision of art. This changed his mindset completely because he didn’t want to be the worlds greatest Ansel Adams imitator. Thompson began to work on this, and even began modifying his photos which his once thought of as a “sin”. From there on he began creating images straight from his visions into incredible images.
Personal Thoughts
Thompson said the reason he takes black and white photos, is not just because they are so appealing. But it connects to him and growing up in a black and white world, with black and white T.V’s and living in in a country segregated into black and white people, it was just the life he knew best. I personally love black and white photos, because with them you see almost like another version of the photo, where you see more then what you would usually see.
The reason I love his photos to such an extent, is that some of the photos he takes, are quite unusual as they are straight from his mind. Thompsons photos blend together with the whitest whites and the blackest blacks in a very eye catching way. Using not only the beauty of contrast but reflections too.
My Favourites
These photos are my favourite because of the lines and depth and they don't even look real, which is why I love black and white photos cause it almost does look like you would see more then a normal colour photo.
My Photos
I actually didn’t mean to take this photo, but
the black and white clashed well, I didn’t use the whitest of whites except
slightly on the branches you can see. But I liked it a lot as it was .
T his photo has nice perspective has the railing
leads you down the stairs. With that and the blacks whites and inbetweens it
turned out awesome.

This photo was taken in spirit of Christmas,
no matter if its only November or not! It’s also got more lights in it, and
without them there wouldn’t be much contrast against the tree.
This photo I decided to take while just sitting in the hub, I looked over and saw the sun shining through the window. So I took this photo and it turned out really nice.
I took this photo with inspiration of a photo Cole Thompson took, it is one of my favourites that he took.
This is another light photo, it has a lot of nice greys in it and I think that helps a lot.
I was rummaging through random things in my house and found some glasses and put them on a white background, because I knew it would contrast nicely in a black and white photo.
This is one of the few photos I took of lights, since they are obviously bright they contrast well and turn out really nice.
I thought this photo was really cool, it almost could tell a story but you wouldn’t be sure what of, overall it looks nice as the background is being framed through the window.
I took this picture of my guitar on a white
background, I personally love my guitar so I knew this had to be one of my
photos. You can also see a lot more of
the slight reflections in black and white.
